From Alex DeLeon's blog: Welcome to Another Era Disco balls, Afros, free love, and zero...

Welcome to Another Era

Disco balls, Afros, free love, and zero tolerance for the usage of bras. The seventies were quite a decade. When writing a song with that decade in its title, you have a lot to live up to.

I had the opportunity to work on this track with two of my favorite people in the world: Patrick Stump and my father. What most of you don’t know is that my dad is probably the number one reason I am where I am, and the reason I started singing and playing music. My dad sang for a bunch of pop bands and rock bands. Flirt, Casanova, and Monkeyshine were all names of bands and groups he sang for. My dad was a great frontman. I used to go to all of his concerts, and I remember always being the proudest son ever. My dad in my eyes was a rockstar.

His voice destroys mine. I’d kill to be able to sing like him and I’m glad I got even one-tenth of his talent. Anyway… He got me my first guitar and always supported me and my bands. I started The Cab, and you know where the story goes from there. When we danced into the studio to record Whisper War, we were talking about guest vocalists. You know that at one point Max Bemis was in talks to sing on the bridge of “This City is Contagious?” Of all the singers in the world, I wanted my dad to sing on the record. So yes, on “That 70’s Song” my father, George DeLeon, sings all of the harmonies. Harmonizing with your dad is the coolest feeling ever.

I also got to work with Patrick on this song. He is the most genuine guy I’ve met in this shady industry. If you haven’t had a conversation with Pat, you haven’t lived or learned. I’ve learned more from writing with him or being in the same room than him than I have from everyone else combined. I’ll talk more about him when I blog on “Bounce” and “One of THOSE Nights.”

Let’s talk about the lyrics.

This story is about being with someone and knowing that the end is inevitable. You know it’s coming like a freight train and as much as you want to deny it, it’s going to run you the hell over.

The song opens talking about how lately I’ve been  unhappy. “Lately I’ve been walking through these places that I cannot stand, I guess it’s just my history talking…etc” is just saying how that’s how I’ve been my whole life… always trying to make the unworkable work. (Is unworkable a word? Haha) The prechorus is her telling me it’ll pass and everything will be sunshine from there on out… but I knew better. I knew the black cloud would follow me… So it was time to tell her “Baby, we belong…This last second chance is blown…I’ve got another you at home.” I wasn’t necessarily saying I was cheating, because I’m not really that guy… but I was saying that she was a dime a dozen and I can find a girl like you, but better, if I choose to, and that I possibly already had someone in mind. I won’t take being treated bad and being unhappy. No one should… so if you’re getting worked over or treated poorly… GET THE HELL OUT!

I love Ian’s solo in this song and I think we all love playing it because it’s such a feel good song! And who doesn’t like shaking their ass here and there? I know I do… Plus watching the beautiful girls in the crowd dance while I sing to them is always a plus ;)

Love me! I dare you!

-Alexander Michael

*That 70’s Song Fun Facts*

-Ian told me the guitar solo was inspired greatly by the guitarist Derek Trucks

-I wrote this song with Patrick

-The demo post chorus had a line of “Woo-hoo’s” instead of “Da da da’s.” Switched it out in the vocal booth after a night of listening to the Jackson 5

-I won the band Nerf Slam Dunk contest in the lounge room while Johnson was recording drums

-“That 70’s Song” was a joke name after we were drinking and watching “That 70’s show.” We laughed about it and in the end decided to use it. Who the hell cares if it’s not a serious name? Can’t live life with your panties always tied in a knot. (There’s a myspace quote for ya) Long live Kelso and Fez!

The best part of waking up every day on tour is knowing that at any point in time you can make a brand new friend…

I named him Tex. Sick of me talking about puppies? Get used to it. When you’re away from home as long as I am, little guys like this seem to keep the boat afloat. C’mon…even if you hate me or the band…you gotta admit that this guy is handsome!

The past few shows have been awesome. The New Mexico crowd was pretty insane…Thank you to everyone who has come up to me at the shows and told me that my blogs inspire them…it means more than you know!

I FORGOT A REALLY COOL FACT ABOUT “HIGH HOPES AND VELVET ROPES”!

If you like the lyric “The devils language tastes of lust…” You can go and say thank you To Alex of All Time Low. (He has an amazing first name, i must say!) He’s one awesome dude. I was stumped in the studio and the cute little lad helped pull me out of the writer’s block ditch.

See you guys soon….

I’ve got butterflies in my stomach and moths in my heart.

From Alex DeLeon's blog: Is this picture boarderline scary? I think so. HIGH HOPES IN...

Is this picture boarderline scary? I think so.

HIGH HOPES IN VELVET ROPES

In a field full of fresh cheerful daises there is always an outcast (or if you’re into hip hop outKast) or two. In this case, there lies a long sexy black rose, thorns and all, with petals set to kill. If Whisper War was my field of daises, than you can be rest assured that “High Hopes and Velvet Ropes” is one of the black roses.

High Hopes is one of the most standout tracks on the album to me. Orignally titled, “JT4”, for reasons obvious to anyone that knows anything about me and my band, this song was inspired musically by an older song by one of my idols. Lyrically…well….I’ll sum it up the best as I can without being too vulgar.

I would like to think that I have grown and matured over the past few years, but in high school, it was safe to say that I was wild. I was crazy. Wanted to be apart of everything. I played basketball and other varsity sports, was a part of the broadcasting and photography programs, but most of all..I lovedddd the females. The song was just talking about my old personality. I was just always looking to have a good time, and a was a scandalous little sprout. Pretty dramatic..looking back I was pretty crazy and pretty dumb, but I had a lot of fun. I wanted to have a song that I could relate to..or at least the high school “me” could relate to.

This song began as a set of lyrics I was working on a few months after getting signed. I was talking to a beautiful young girl (you know exactly who you are and what I a talking about) and one night after we went our seprate ways for the night I wrote a bunch of metaphors. The one that stook out were the lines about a body being like a chess board and our fingers being the chess pieces. In this case, pawns. I love the idea of physical activity, and life actually just being a big game. Its a different way to look at things. The older I get, the more different outlooks I have and try to see.

My favorite lines are “It’s only a crime if I get caught..It’s only a line if it gets bought.” I like the tongue in cheek, play on word lyrics. It’s just saying that if you’re sneaky and good enough at being a shadow, how can you get in trouble? It can’t be a crime if you don’t get busted or if no one knows, and you can’t call something a “line” or a lie if the people you’re trying to fool doesn’t buy it. I can be a pretty nice dude, but I’m glad I got to let out my scandalous sarcastic side in this song.

The goal of this song was to tell a story. The story of a guy who was built like a mouse trap, with his “neon green eyes” as the cheese. The character (maybe it’s me, maybe not ;) …you decide) was just into the chase, and meeting women was just a game to him. He would go to bars and clubs (velvet ropes) and stalk his “prey” like a fierce lion. Okay, so I’m being a little cheesy and dramatic, but so what!? Do I recommend this style of living? Not really. But it was fun as hell to write about.

The bottom line is that everyone has two sides. We all have our romantic, sweet, understanding side…and our sarcastic, sexual, devious side. That’s why I’m so proud of our album..I believe it shows all sides of our band, both musically and personality wise.

As much as my blogs make me sound like a sensitive sap (which most of the time I am) I’m glad I could post this blog to show you guys I can be a little playful, flirty, and mischiveous. I want this blog to show all sides of me, not just one…and as I post more and more..hopefully you will get to meet, know, and love every part of me..not just the guy you see onstage and meet after shows.

If you have ANY questions about this song..please POST in the comments! I read every single one and would love to answer any questions that you guys have…

Love me…I dare you.

-Alexander Michael

High Hopes In Velvet Ropes Facts!

*Ian recorded the guitar to this on a cheap, nylon string spanish guitar with a giant crack in the body

*We decided to use Auto-tune on the prechorus to give it more of an R&B feel

*Our producer Matt Squire helped a lot with this song, and it is by far one of our favorites

*When we play it live COUGHsummerCOUGH I am going to try to pick up an acoustic and play it with the full band

*The original chorus was the prechorus…we didn’t add the “It’s the same game” part until a few days before finishing recording

*Put the song together in Ian’s cabin a block away from Panic’s in Mt. Charleston!

Why Georgia?

“I am driving up 85 in the kind of morning that lasts all afternoon…”

-John Mayer

Who are we? Does who we are determine what we do? Or does what we do determine who we are?

I’ve been in thinking mode. Last week I couldn’t stop dreaming. I was casting a line out to the sky hoping I could reel in the moon. A few weeks ago I was real down…feeling like the more I kick, the farther out to sea I’d drift. But no. Not now. Now, I am in thinking mode. Pondering my life away…why am I where I am? Who exactly am I? What can I do to make a dent in the world around me…

Yesterday we played Augusta, Georgia and I took a walk to the river and just sat down and thought. Sometimes it’s hard to find ourselves. We live these fast paced lives, where everything revolves around clocks, due dates, assignments, and deadlines. What happened to being alive? What happened to doing what we WANTED and not what we feel like people EXPECT from us. You live life once. You have one shot to make the most of everyday and you have one shot to give your all into impacting the lives around you and the ground you walk on. You just have to have the heart and courage to do so. It takes much more than a beating heart to make your legs move. I think a very important band to me said it best…

“It’s safe to fall if you just trust the ground that you stand on.”

Who cares if we make mistakes? Who cares if we look dumb while trying? Who is anybody to judge? You can’t fly without jumping. You can’t live without dreaming. And you can’t become who you are, without leting go of everything you aren’t and weren’t meant to be.

Its called destiny. It’s called integrity. It’s called YOU. It comes in the form of every boy and girl, it’s just up to each and everyone of us to let it out. Scream, live, and believe at the top of your lungs. Mediocrity is NOT okay. We can be more than that.

I had an extremely long morning. I get bummed out sometimes. I always want to do and be more. I ask myself ten times a day what I’ve done wrong. I guess sometimes not being a success story can make you feel like a flat out failure. Mayer said it well… When you go as fast as people like I do, things send to drag on and everything blends together and you start to lose your grasp of reality and what’s really going on around you. This is a hard life…but this is a beautiful one, and everytime I get down I think about that.

Everytime I get down, which has been quite a lot lately, I think about all of the people I love…and you guys have become a part of that. I think about YOU. The one who waited 6 hours in the poruing rain to see us play a 25 minute set. I think about about YOU. The one who bought our debut album the first day it came out. The truth is… You are all we’ve got, and whether you realize it or not…you keep us strong. You keep our smiles high and our doubts low. You keep the wheels turning and our minds breathing.

Does this blog make sense? Most likely not. Is it about one particular thing? Not really. It is me rambling while sitting next to a river looking out at he world around me and jotting down what I see. I. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense…but some things in the world don’t need to. They just need to be believed in.

Please…keep casting your lines out to the skies…you just might get a bite.

Wear love like a window to your soul.

Happy Valentine’s Day to the people that mean most to me… You’re in my thoughts.

-Alexander Michael

We can skate to Jessica Simpson’s “Public Affair” song and play a show at the same time! Look out world!

ahhh…gotta love touring :) I’ll remember these days until the day I die. I love the dudes in my band like brothers. I’d be nothing without them.

Me and Ian fell at the same time and couldn’t help but laugh until we cried about it. Ian is just like an 8 year old. He has ADD. He is out of his mind… and i love him for it. Wish you guys could have been apart of this moment with us!!!

From Alex DeLeon's blog: Vegas Skies

Thank you so much for the great reactions and responses I got for last week’s song blog about Take My Hand. You have no idea how much it means that you care about the music and words that I write. It’s why I do what I do. I don’t do this to party and I don’t do it to be a “rockstar.” To be honest..I don’t even care if I ever become famous. I just want my songs to be famous. I could careless if people know what I look like or who I am..as long as my songs get to as many ears as they possibly can, I’m happy. They’re like my little babies. Little pieces of me. On that note… I’d like to introduce to you one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. It is by far my most personal song..and the lyrics are all extremely true and specific.

It seems like a lot of people in bands keep their personal lives to themselves. A lot of them don’t talk about or try to hide their true feelings, their love life, etc. I definetly respect that, but at the same time…you guys aren’t just “fans.” You guys are apart of me. You are my friends, and many of you have become family. You put food on my plate, wind in my sails, and love in my heart. So I decided I was going to be as honest with you as possible..so you guys know the REAL ME. Not the Me that the label or record execs want you to see. I won’t ever lie and pretend to be someone I’m not…I owe that to you guys and to the people I love.

Vegas skies is about a beautiful young girl named Logan Elizabeth.

I was in high school, and being the spontaneous little kid that I was, me and my buddy Matt decided to leave town. So we packed our bags and headed to Laguna. I know most of you probably associate Laguna Beach with the reality show with the over dramatic girls arguing over who kissed who and who’s nails were what color and when they were done. But to be honest..I find that painfully sad. Laguna is an incredibly beautiful little beach town; filled with character, history, and fun. Just when I thought the little beach town couldn’t be anymore beautiful…I met Logan. She was amazing. Amazing smile. Turquiose eyes. A laugh more memorable than any song I had ever heard. But there was a problem…she was with another guy. We talked..and I knew immediately that she was one of a kind. It broke my heart that she was taken…but I respected it and a few days later I left Laguna…with nothing but the memory of her. I never forgot about that smile. Not once.

When we talked in Laguna..she would tell me about how unhappy she was with everything. Her life..the cruel, pompous guy she was with, and may other things. I wanted to save her. I wanted to be there for her. My heart was broken into a million pieces when I found out she couldn’t be mine. But I stayed strong and never forgot about her. This girl made me laugh, smile, and smile some more. I felt like I was a better person having met her and spent a few days with her. Logan was my miracle, and I was determined to wait as long as it took, forever if I had to, to call her mine.

When things get hard for me…I write songs. This time was no different. I wrote the chorus first… I told myself that I would wait forever for her. I would wait until it was our time to be together…and I did wait. For a few years. That’s what the lyrics “I’ve only got forever and forever is fine.”

When you’re in love… Forever is nothing. To wait forever for love is no time at all..because when it finally does come, it is met with the most breathtaking feeling imaginable. If you haven’t felt what love and to be loved feels like..then you’re missing out on the best this world has to offer. So the words “I’ve only got forever, and forever is fine. Just take your time” were just saying that I would wait as long as it took to be with her. You can’t give up on love, because I promise love will never give up on you. It didn’t give up on me…

Years later I saw her again, and this time..we weren’t going to leave each other’s side. From there it was history. Waiting for love, had paid off and it made me the happiest boy in the entire world.

My favorite line is “You stole my eyes and I’ve never looked back.”  I think it captures how I felt in a perfect and honest manner. Because it is the truth..I haven’t looked back since the day I met her. “When we’re this young, we have nothing to lose..” is another line that means a lot to me. You can’t pass up oppurtunities when it comes to love, because you’ll regret it for the rest of you life. I have made many mistakes..but I learn from them and grow from them.

The bottom line of this song is that love is real. Everybody has the right to love and be loved. It IS possible to find true love and it IS possible to feel like a prince, or a princess. Afterall, she is mine. We live in a world where a lot of things go wrong…but where even more things go right. For every heart that breaks, two hearts are planted and waiting to find the sunlight and the water to grow. When things get down…keep your head up. I truly do believe in the fact that good things come to those who wait and are patient. I had to wait a very long time..but my world finally came to me and came together in the form of a single beautiful girl named Logan. I truly don’t know where or who I’d be without her.

Vegas Skies is simple. It’s a story of true love and patience. I know things get hard..and a lot of times it feels like the world is crashing down on you..but you need to reach down and pick up those pieces, grab some glue and put it back together. We determine our own destiny. Love came to me in the form of a lovely young lady named Logan…who knows in what form it will come to you in. Love me. Love yourself. Love those around you. It’s a lot easier to love that way. It is true that it takes many more muscles to frown than it does to smile. Don’t be afraid of falling in love. Don’t be afraid of love falling into you. But afraid of it NOT. Remember…it may take what seems like forever…but for love…

Forever is fine.

-Alexander Michael

P.S. Love me. I dare you.

- I think I’m going to post the orignal demo of this song here real soon…so keep an eye and ear out for that

-I’m going to start playing guitar for this song onstage in an upcoming tour. Hint hint…summer? Headlining tour maybe??

See you soon ;)

Isn’t she lovely?

I know I haven’t gotten very far in this business, but along this journey I have made some of the best friends in all of the world. Someday the bright lights will be turned off. I need to be heard.

My heart broke today. I know I am not a preacher. I am not a begger. I am but a 19 year old guy with the same size heart and mind as the rest of the people my age… But I want to let this out.

When I started this blog I did it for one reason. To keep in touch with you guys, the people I care about. The ones who have supported me from the start. I promised I wouldn’t try to force anything down anyone’s throats… and I’m going to keep my word. However, while people are still interested in this blog, while a few people are going to my page, I am going to tell a story that I believe all should hear.

I believe in freedom. I believe in being able to stand up and in being able to do and say what you believe in. I pray for the safety and love of everyone who fights and defends our freedom at all corners of this world. I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in freedom of choice; but what about the simple freedoms we take for granted? The freedom to wake up in the morning next to the people we love? The freedom to watch our younger brothers and sisters grow? The freedom to sit on a beach and to watch the sunset, knowing that in a few short hours we’ll have the freedom to wake up and watch that same beautiful sun rise. Let’s go even more simple.

What about the freedom to smile?

Isn’t a smile universal? Isn’t a smile sometimes all we have? We can be rich or poor. Young or old. Man or woman… but we can all smile. Well, almost all….

I came across the story of a beautiful little girl named Angelica Joy. Born in the Philippines. She was born strong. Born from loving parents and born with hope. However… sweet little Angelica Joy was born with a cleft lip. She was born without the ability to smile. How sad is that? The poor girl couldn’t smile at her parents’ eyes. Couldn’t smile at the sound of a sweet lullaby. I am teary eyed typing this. Of all the horrible things going on around the world and of all the freedoms that different countries have and don’t have… I believe we should all have the freedom to smile.

There is hope. There is an amazing charity set up for children with this setback and it is called SmileTrain.org. In 10 years they have funded almost half of a million surgeries on beautiful children just like Angelica Joy, and they could really use our help.

Look… I know my band isn’t big. I know I’m not an A-list celebrity… Hell, I’m not even a Z-list celebrity. I am just like all of you. I don’t have much money… but you know what? That doesn’t mean I can’t help. You don’t need money to change the world. You need spirit. You need love. Though I don’t have much, I do plan on making some sort of small donation. You don’t have to do the same but I am asking you to at least help spread the word. If we can’t afford to help out in these tough economic times, we can still get the word out. The economy can empty our pockets but it’ll never empty and rid our chests from the love and support that we have for the people around us. If you don’t want to do this for me… I understand. If you hate my band or love my band, that’s fine. But do it for Angelica Joy. Do it for her mother who just wants her precious child to be able to smile back at her.

Angelica was lucky enough to be able to get the surgery thanks to people like us who passed along the word and who donated money. But thousands of kids still need our help. These babies did nothing wrong and they deserve nothing short of the shot of life that we have.

We CAN change the world. One smile at a time.

I love you guys… if you ever need anything at all… I’m here. Thank you for listening… and don’t forget to smile.

Sometimes the simple things are the most beautiful.

-Alexander Michael

Here is one of our new shirts. I love it; Marshall doesn’t. He’ll get over it though, I’m sure. It’s two killer whales taking their name far too literally. I think it’s rad. Who doesn’t love a killer Shamu? That’s like having a killer Mickey Mouse on a shirt. I also love the blood flowing like a river out of the whale’s mouth. Mr. Edward Shamu Cullen. Shamu L. Jacskon. Free Killy. i love the skull floating in the background. What do you think the guy’s name was? Fred? Elvis? A member of Forever the Sickest Kids? Who knows? Post comments on what you think the story behind this shirt is. What did the man do to get eaten by the killer whales? Hahaha, I don’t know why i’m wasting a post on this. i just think it’s awesome. Come pick one up at our shows. Shamu would kick Flipper’s ass. or Fin? Do dolphins even have asses?

*DISCLAIMER*

Dear Peta,
The Cab loves whales very, very much (though not as much as manatees) so don’t be sad.

-Alexander Michael

P.S. Free Willy was the first movie ever to make me cry.

I stopped by Angels and Kings for the first time on Tuesday night… I’m not a party animal, but I went by to finally check it out. Give it my seal of approval. Arf! Arf! (Wow, how old am I again?) It was great to see firsthand what hard work can do. The bar was started by a lot of my friends, the place looked great, and I couldn’t help but to be proud and inspired by it all. The mug shots on the wall were rad. Especially the large one of Ol’ Blue Eyes (Frank Sinatra) on one of the red walls. Besides the smell of vodka, sweat, and awkwardness it was great. Everyone knew everyone, which I couldn’t decide was amazing, or a very unfortunate fact. (Thank you Rob Hitt for the great selection of 80’s dance music and for playing The Ting Tings.)

…SHUT UP AND LET ME GO…HEY!!!!…

I was literally there for only a few minutes and here is a list of things that happened to me:

  1. The purple people eater, Gabe, tried to make a move on me. With his tongue as a sword.
  2. I ran into friends from BLG, Cash Cash, Steel Train, Steven from Steven’s Untitled rock Show, Cobra, Midtown ( J), The Early November, etc. etc. etc.
  3. I saw every shade of nike dunks and wannabe 80’s neon leggings. When I say every shade, I mean every damn Crayola Crayon shade. (Yes, Even Tickle Me Pink) And yes, that is a real color. Go look it up, lurkers.
  4. I managed to down 2 and a half Coca Cola Classics. (Told you I’m a party animal! ROAR! OINK! OMFG!)
  5. Watched a dude dance around like shit was going out of style in nothing but boxer briefs, eyeliner, and a tie
  6. Fell to my knees and prayed to God to save me from the dude that was dancing around shit was going out of style in nothing but boxer briefs, eyeliner, and a tie.

I love New York City. It’s unique. It’s passionate. And if you give it a little love…it’ll love you back. I’m just over the healthy food and the pigeons. Seriously…give me some grease and Parrots in the house okay? Going shopping tomorrow and stopping by MTV for a few interviews. Wish me luck. I hate these things. I always feel awkward and the bright lights begin to blind me. I love how the glove is getting so much attention. People love it, and people hate it. Get used to it, cuz it ain’t goin anywhere. You can hate it all you want..but it refuses to not be heard. You can call it the Pete Wentz  of Gloves. Or the Kanye of hand keeper-warmers…. Keeper-warmers? What the hell? This is the part where I cut myself off before I say anything else that makes you guys think I’m some sick, weird, sadistic lunatic.

Here are some pics of me with two of my favorite people in the world.

Love me. I dare you.
